Disability Access at Fuel Stations & Convenience Stores

All gas stations are required to provide access to people with disabilities. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires all Public Accommodations to be accessible including: gas stations and markets that serve them. Fuel station facilities can vary in size and offer a wide range of amenities. Owners of these facilities should have a good understanding about disability access requirements that are applicable to the featured provided. Failure to understand how people with disabilities interact with the built environment can lead to “ADA Lawsuits”.

Certified Access Specialists educate business owners about their facilities by conducting a thorough inspection of the entire site. A CASp Inspector will typically evaluate the condition of fuel pumps, air and water dispensers, parking, accessible paths of travel, markets, counters and restrooms if provided. We evaluate every accessible feature provided on the site so that property owners and/or business owners can make informed decisions about disability access improvements. Following an onsite inspection, the Certified Access Specialist will generate a CASp Report that details the areas and elements that require improvement. Included in the report are recommendations for remediation. This report is the foundation for a near term and long term barrier removal strategy that increases accessibility for customers and decreases exposure to accessibility related litigation.
