ADA Compliant Restrooms
If your business has a restroom that is open to the public, then it must be ADA compliant. Accessible restroom facilities have many ADA requirements because there are so many different elements, configurations and dimensions to consider. A blog post or web search simply isn’t going to provide you enough information to apply to your facility. Every space has constraints that can make accessible design challenging and in some cases impossible without expanding the size of a restroom.
If your new construction or alteration project is in the design phase, we highly recommend hiring a Certified Access Specialist early in the process. Doing so could save tens of thousands of dollars and prevent project delays. Revising an architectural drawing will always be more cost effective than making a change order during construction.
It is highly recommended that you hire a CASp inspector to evaluate for ADA compliance as well as the California Building Code if the facility is located in the state. Providing your CASp inspector with the alteration history of the restroom facilities will help your inspector apply the appropriate standards to your particular project.
